This really makes my excited, absolutely over the top xmas experience of 1:27 scale slot cars in 1968 seem... weak. Luckily, I have a built in 4th dimension adapt-o-meter that allows me to appreciate now, without denigrating the past.

What dad was driving when I was born. Had to sell it to eat because family.

Good Dad. Finding a replacement for his long-lost car would make you the best offspring ever.

A flat track and TT racer on a 500cc Triumph twin in the 50’s. Gave me Harley and Indian(!) rides in the early 60’s. Corvettes, Barracuda’s, Impala’s all ensued (I was *very* familiar with their back seats.) Then went all “old” and he bought a 1979 Rabbit Diesel and drove that thing 312K miles into the ground. Honda Accord after that (which is near ground, but still going.) Not sure he was Oppo material, but damn he was Oppo early on.

Finding a replacement for that e-type convertible (they came in 3 versions, hardtop, soft top and an in-between type that had a seamless interior and a seemingly convertible exterior but was semi-heavy to take off and remove would be problematic. I think I’ll just find a Volvo 1800ES to caretake and call it a life.

Lucky guy. I didn’t have a dad around to indoctrinate me, but the bug seems to run in the family. Grandma had a ‘cuda back in the ‘60s and bought a Shelby Daytona in the ‘80s. One of my uncles had a mid-’70s Camaro and the other had a 1970 Challenger. The one with the Challenger met and married a girl with a mid-’70s Firebird Formula whose mom owned an early ‘80s ‘vette. When he had kids, he moved from fast cars to fast quads. He’s the one who taught me the finer points of jumping dunes and wrenching on cars.

Grandma’s gone and the uncles have settled down. One of the cousins married a car guy (fast mustangs are his thing) and another caught the bug like me. The others didn’t. I guess I’ll have to be the crazy cousin that passes the torch along to their kids as well as mine.
